It has been less than three weeks since we trudged through the snow of the Smokey Mountains. We stopped to visit Chicory’s brother and family in Topsail Beach, NC, before moving further south. Happy to have the cold and rainy weather behind us, we packed up our coats and scarves and traded them for our swimsuits and beach towels. We are now soaking up the warm sun in southern Florida along with the surfers and the bugs. Hiking in the snowy mountains one week and the warm sands the next has added such a a delightful variety to trailer-life. The diversity of places and people is rather inspiring. There is no need to worry that we might get stuck, though. I think the bugs will keep us from getting too comfortable.
The biting midges here have left most of us looking like we had a severe case of the chicken pox. And for the few that had sore throats and colds also, I can only imagine the deja vu. How could we not enjoy the towering palm tree jungles? We keep asking ourselves this as we agonize over the terrible itchiness. Maybe this is why there are not as many people out here enjoying the sun as there are in California.
The weather here is in the upper seventies. The children have spent many after school hours playing in the ocean surf, which is nearly the same temperature. The ocean has definitely been everyone’s favorite part of the south so far.
